Tieflings are not the direct offspring of human and devils, but are the true-breeding descendants of the ancient empire of Bael Turath who made dark and terrible pacts with the Nine Hells. Their fiendish visage is actually a manifestation of a curse, due to their progenitors' blasphemous crimes. 

Tieflings are tall (males average 6') and lithe, with a wide range of skin and hair colors, and eyes that simmer like green, red, or yellow coals. All tielflings sport black teeth and nails, a pair of goat-like horns, and a long spined tail.

The empire of Bael Turath flourished over 3,000 years ago in modern day Lyrrea. Sages whisper that they were a dark and brooding people, who trafficked with fiendish creatures to expand their power and prestige. Eventually, the nobles of the empire swore the Dark Pact, and willingly transformed themselves into tieflings. The tielfings then began to transform the citizens of the empire into the same hellspawn creatures. Any Turathi who objected to the Dark Pact were sacrificed to the powers of Hell. In time, the tiefling race bred true.

The Turathi were always a proud and bigoted folk, and these characteristics only intensified in the years following the Dark Pact. The Turathi grew to despise the other races of Erythea. This eventually brought them into conflict with the powerful dragonborn empire of Arkhoshia, and the two realms fought a terrible war that lasted for over a hundred years. After a century of brutal warfare, the two empires utterly annihilated each other in a magical conflagration known to sages as the Invoked Devastation.

The tielfings of today are a forlorn and secretive race. They are typically shunned for their fiendish appearance, and so keep to the fringes of society. Tieflings are sly and charming, and are renown for their abilities as rogues and warlocks.
