Rule!
In 4E, your character is only supposed to begin play with the Common
tongue and one or two other languages listed in your particular Race
entry. You can also pick up the Linguist feat (PHB, pg 198) to learn 3
more languages (you can even select the feat multiple times). I want you
to know more languages than that. For our game, I'm going to grant
additional languages to all 1st level characters, as follows:
-
Each
character gets the languages as mentioned in their Race entry in the Players
Handbook (Common and one or two others).
-
Each
character also receive a language from the list below based on their
selected home region.
-
Each
character can choose an additional language based on their
Intelligence score modifier.
In
addition to the languages listed on pae 25 of the Players Handbook,
the
following human languages are in common usage in civilized lands:
-
Aziiri
- Spoken in Aziiryan and many of the cities of Azhendor and the
Crowded Sea.
-
Emerish
- A simple language spoken in the Emerald Isles of Arthedain, Cedara, and Emerlene.
-
Hraalvic
- Spoken in Hraalvar and the Grey Isles; noted for having no word for
the concept of "peace"-the closest word translates as
"a brief respite from fighting".
-
Karvejian
- Spoken in Karvejia, the Cutlass Isles, and many of the cities of the
Pearl Sea.
-
Tradespeak
- Tradespeak is a form of pidgin language
incapable of expressing complex ideas, but sufficient to secure
lodging and make most business transactions. It is primarily a trade
tongue, as merchants from far parts of the world use it when
exchanging goods. Even with its very limited vocabulary, Tradespeak
works because virtually everyone knows it.
-
Mendric
- A dialect of the Emerish language, heavily influenced by Faelee (see
below); spoken in Menderlyne.
-
Voldairan
- A very sophisticated language (46 letters in its alphabet) spoken in Voldaire and many of the cities of western and northern
Lyrrea; it is noted for having 26 different words for the concept of
"deception".
-
Zhevreni
- A dialect of Karvejian spoken by the nomadic Zhevreni.
The
following languages are considered "dead" tongues:
-
Acherian
- Spoken in Acheras (5,900 yrs ago).
-
Auld
Aziiri (Noble Aziiri) - Spoken in the ancient Aziiryan Empire (400
yrs ago).
-
Faelee
- Also known as "Greenspeak"; spoken by the enigmatic,
fey-touched Green Folk who once ruled the Emerald Isles (8,900 yrs
ago). This language may still be in use in parts of Menderlyne.
-
High
Lemyrian - Spoken in ancient Lemyria (5,900 yrs ago).
-
Hyrakani
- Spoken in ancient Hyrakania (1,900 yrs ago).
-
Turathian
- Spoken in ancient Bael Turath (3,200 yrs ago).
