Karvejia is in some ways two separate nations ruled by nine princes. The nine merchant-princes form the dreaded Negre Costarum (the Black Ring), and through their monopoly on trade hold absolute authority in Karvejia. Each prince is a master of "The Game." They vie against each other to increase their power, wealth, and station, and all the people of Karvejia (and Erythea) are pawns in their deadly games of intrigue. There have not always been nine princes; there have been as many as twelve and as few as three. Today there are nine. Who knows about tomorrow?

Continental Karvejia is covered in swamps and flood plains, which has caused the princes to build their castles on the southern islands while maintaining provincial control over the mainland. The islands are responsible for less than twenty percent of Karvejia's production, but all of its trade. Karvejia controls nearly all trade in the Pearl Sea and the Crowded Sea.

Karvejia may be the most dangerous land in all of Erythea. A careless word, a misstep, even a second glance could cost you your life. Never turn your back on a challenge, never meet a woman's gaze unless you are sure your blade is faster than her husband's, and never trust anyone.

Karvejia is the second greatest economic force in the world, second only to Voldaire, with whom they are locked in a sometimes bloody economic war. Karvejia continues to recover from the recent Trade Wars (AR 804-825 and 874-895) with Voldaire. Since the Treaty of Vodaccium was signed five years ago, wealth has once again begun to pour into the hands of the greedy members of the Negre Costarum.

Decendants of ancient Aziiri colonists, the people of Karvejia are an emotional and tempermental lot. They have great passions, and a great respect for strength and cunning. Brawls are as common among the lower classes as duels are among the nobles. Karvejia is home to beautiful courtesans, corrupt and decadent merchant princes, and the enigmatic cabal of warlocks known as Fate Witches.
