you don't know where you're going, any road will suffice."
—Emerlenian proverb.

declared themselves king: King Tyrun rules from Dun Maragh as "King
in the North", and King Relzan (Relzan the Reluctant) rules from Cairnhold as "King in
the South"; also, no less than 20 other minor lordlings have staked claims to various parts of Emerlene.

Maragh (33,000), Hammerfall (21,000), Kingsgate (capital; 125,000).

Emerlene
is the largest of the Emerald Isle nations, and has long been a dominant
player in regional politics. The country is still suffering the
repercussions of the death
of King Arthem in a hunting accident 78 years ago. The kingdom was, before
Arthem's death, one of the most prosperous countries of Erythea. Now, it
is a country under threat from without and within and struggling to hold on to order. Battles and skirmishes between rival lords continue
unchecked, bandits plague the roadways, and monsters and humanoids prowl the
wilderness.
By
and large, the
folk of Emerlene are a clever and industrious lot, eager to explore new
lands and embrace new experiences. The port cities of Blackport and
Kingsgate are hubs for foreign merchants and world travelers, so Emerlenians are
constantly exposed to new ideas, religions, and inventions. Most
Emerlenians are highly competitive, and enjoy contests involving riddles
and games of skill and chance. To the other folk of the Emerald Isles,
Emerlenians, with their know-it-all demeanors, may seem a bit haughty or
outright arrogant.
In
AR 822, King Arthem was killed by a stag while hunting in the Kings Wood.
With no
heir, the country fell into civil war. At the death of the king, the Hand of the
King, Belthan the Black of House Mileswood, secured the
city of Kingsgate
and claimed stewardship of the crown until a
peaceful decision could be made to determine the next ruler of Emerlene.
After 78 years, this peace has yet to materialize, and the Mileswood
family continues
their stewardship.
Four
years ago, Lord Tyrun "the Wolf" of House Mord staged a successful coup in
the city of Dun Maragh and declared himself "King in the North".
In response, his arch-rival, Lord Relzan of House Felengar rallied
supporters and declared himself "King in the South"—though
some folk suggest that Relzan, known as "Relzan the Reluctant",
was more or less coerced into this act by the greedy and ambitious southern
nobles. Though
these two "kings" are the two main antagonists in Emerlene
today, many minor lordlings have staked claims
to various parts of the shattered kingdom.
The
Tzorn Dynasty
The
kings and queens of Emerlene, from AR 589 until 822, were all members of
the same royal family: House Tzorn. With the death of King Arthem in
AR 822, it appears the Tzorn line is no more.
